Who gets to decide who achieves the American Dream? Is the American Dream made to fit you? This is the question that many citizens ask themselves in hopes that the answer is yes. But towards many, the American Dream is not easily accessible especially for citizens of color. This idea has been shown through many periods of time. There are many barriers that people of color have to face in order to get to the American Dream. People of color have to work harder to be able to achieve the American Dream. Through the book American Dreaming by Sara J. Mahler. In this novel Sara states “Since immigrants are foreign to the prestige hierarchy in the host country, they are less affected by the stigma attached to these jobs.” (Page 8). This statement helps to support the idea that immigrants and people of color are not fully given all the resources America has to give. Due to the lack of resources they receive they can not make it to the American Dream. People of color and immigrants will then be stuck doing the jobs that others are not willing to do. White people use the people of color’s inability to understand to benefit themself. Instead of lending a helping hand and making sure everyone succeeds they take away different resources for others to make sure that they will not be able to achieve the American Dream. Looking into the opportunity lost and lack of resources immigrants and people of color face it is safe to say that the system created is not in their favor. It helps to show the idea that the American Dream was not tailored to help people of color to thrive but to make sure that they do not make any advancements. The system creates so many different barriers for people of color to face to make it harder for them to be able to achieve their American Dream. With the lack of resources and opportunities, they have to work harder than others, setting them back from achieving their American Dream earlier.
