Looking for Someone to Blame: Who Is Guilty of Murders of Simon and Piggy There is always someone who is responsible for the crime that was committed. In the Lord of the Flies by William Golding many crimes were described but no one was directly accused of committing them. The most serious of crimes is murder. Boys on the island tore Simon apart. But they shouldn’t be blamed without deeper thought. Samneric seems to be innocent friend of Simon, but he is guilty of murder. Another terrible murder in the book is death of Piggy. The littluns were openly afraid, but biguns pretended they don’t believe in beast. Everything happening on the island was managed by biguns, so beastie was not considered a problem in the beginning. Biguns acknowledged the existence of the beast only after Samneric thought he saw the beast. Samneric told the boys while holding the conch “We’ve seen the beast with our own eyes. No-we weren’t asleep-” (Golding100). He was not the first to see the beast, but he was a first bigun to see the beast. Jack and Ralph also saw it, but both of them were already convinced in its existence. They saw what they expected to see. What appeared to be the beast was a dead parachuting man. Samneric didn’t check anything; he imagined claws and teeth that terrified everyone. If he didn’t run away in panic and actually checked what ‘beast’ really is, Simon would be alive. Reader feels very bad for Piggy the whole book, but looking at all the evidence Piggy is guilty of his own death. Piggy asked for Ralph’s name but “The fat boy waited to be asked his name in turn but this proffer of acquaintance was not made” (Golding 9). He is called pig by everyone. They don’t know his name. Everyone makes fun of him. He is on the bottom of the hierarchy. Ralph warns him “You’ll get hurt” (Golding 171). Fat boy knows bad things will be done to him and he still goes there.
