What is the "American Dream"? This topic has been heavily debated for many years, even likely since the term was first coined. But, breaking it down to the main rules this country and its people seem to value most, three factors can be found. These three most vital parts of the American Dream are gaining and keeping control, spreading beliefs, and obtaining money. Having control over others, be it individual people or entire countries, has, for a long time, been part of the American Dream. Though it may be partially taken from England 's seeming obsession with taking over countries when America was first founded, evidence of this can still be found dating after the Revolutionary War. As a whole country, America hasn 't travelled too far to take over other countries entirely, but it definitely has in other ways. For example, the war over Texas. Both America and Mexico wanted Texas, but as one can see, America wanted it more. This goes for the entirety of the country, in fact, because colonists definitely didn 't own this land first. Although it is considered a necessity in order to live, Americans in particular seem to value the gaining and keeping of money, a desire which seems to increase the more money a person has. Though the lower classes don’t seem to believe in this very much, this is very apparent in the upper classes. Many rich people do have enough money to retire happily, but just because of this American Dream, they want to keep earning more. Money is often used to measure somebody’s worth, so when somebody has the opportunity arises to make more money, it is often taken, even if one doesn’t need it. So, these three components of the American Dream; the want for control, spread of beliefs, and desire for money, are truly the most prominent rules many Americans subconsciously follow as they live their lives.
