What are the differences between large and small organizations? Is your practicum site a large or small agency? Describe your reasons for your answer.
There are several differences between large and small agencies. Most large agencies are centralized, meaning that they have systems in place that include formal structures, organizational charts and lines of authority that employees must follow. Typically, larger organizations are hospitals, government programs, and corporations that run treatment facilities. One of the great thing about this smaller organization is that everyone has a voice within the organization and we all work as a team to help the young people that attend Youth Outlook.
What is your ideal organization in terms of IRS status, size, informal organization, and funding sources?
My ideal job would be working for a small for profit or nonprofit organization. I like the idea of relaxed organization as it allows people to have a voice within the company. I feel that an informal work environment is better, because it allows people to work together to establish their own decision-making abilities and allows for people to work together establish rules and understanding within the agency. When it comes to funding source for smaller nonprofit and profit organizations most of these agencies rely on grants, insurance, or fund raising to keep their business open and running. They don’t always have state or federal funding sources to maintain the cost effectiveness that help to drive the business. Most of the drop-in centers at Youth Outlook are manned by one program leader and a couple of volunteers. Therefore, we don’t really follow a structured formal process when it comes to dealing with problems or other issues that may arise in each site. Within the informal structure each of us play a role within the agency that allows for the day to day work of the organization. What it comes down to is that we all report to the program director with any concerns or issue that come may come about at a specific site. In addition, we all have knowledge of the rules that apply and the chain of command that allows the staff and volunteers to assume responsibility in an unstructured environment. I enjoy this type of environment as it allows for more individual freedom when working with clients and allows the staff and volunteers to work together more effectively. In addition, this informal setting also allows for everyone to develop better relationships and cooperation that helps promote a safe and welcoming environment for the young people that attend Youth
