The book “It’s Complicated” is explaining the virtual world we live in now. This is made evident when boyd talks about Facebook as an addiction. “It’s just like any other addiction,” young say. “It’s hard to wean yourself (77).” By presenting this idea that Facebook is addicting, this may drive people to think of it as a need and not as a want. Through her research, boyd wants us to look at our own use of Facebook and if this characteristic of addiction describes us. If you read this part of the book it will make you think of your own use of social media and what it represents for you. The word ‘addiction’ is almost always associated with alcohol or drug use but never with social media or other forms of virtually. By using this word boyd is using sociological thinking to redefine that word to fit the misuse of social media. Deep down I know I could be addicted to social media because I use it sometimes to avoid having interpersonal connections with people. A boy who decided to quit Facebook had some difficulties with interpersonal connections, “He found negotiating interpersonal relationships more challenging (77).” Some people find it hard to quit Facebook and other social media outlets because they would have to come to terms with interpersonal connections. It’s hard to admit but it’s the truth, will I change anything? No. Even though I’m not going to change anything in my life right now, I might change my mind after reading this book. For now, I do agree with the statement that Facebook is addictive. It is addictive because Facebook is misused by people for long periods of time.
