In the short story “It’s That It Hurts” by Tomas Rivera, a boy gets expelled. The “it” in this short story is his hope, because he hopes that he will be a telephone operator, hopes that his mother will walk in with him on his first day of his new school, and he hopes that he won’t get in trouble with his parents. This shows that his hope is lost throughout the short story. To begin with, his parents have always had high hopes that their son will become a telephone operator. When he gets expelled he starts thinking that he won’t be a success to his parents, because he won’t graduate and succeed in his dream job.

The boy’s pride was splintered by having to be nude in the sight of a complete stranger. In the story the boy had to strip down naked in front of the nurse. This hurt his pride because he was uncomfortable with stripping down in front of a stranger.
He pointed out Mr. Cathey consistent bombardments of challenges and how he handle each situation. Every good point in his life such as becoming a father was met with a bad point in which he couldn’t go to school because he became a father. The author allowed us to feel happy for the situations that seemed any reasonable person would feel good about and upset about the unforeseen variables that tend to find Mr. Cathey. The author makes sure you feel the joy and pain of a young man who could have made it to a higher level but came up short because of his bad decision

Summary- Simon Kelleher is the author of the gossip page About That, in which he spreads secrets and hateful comments about his peers at Bayview High School. One day in afterschool detention, Simon has an allergic reaction and dies. Four students witnessed his death, Bronwyn, Addy, Nate, and Cooper, who were all in detention after they were caught with phones in class. The Police find that there was peanut oil in the cup that Simon had drunk out of, and they realize that it was not just a coincidence. Someone had posted online that Simon’s death was not just a coincidence and that one of the four students who were in detention with Simon was the murderer.
To begin with, he does not come from a wealthy family and wants to be a telephone operator like his dad. In the story the boy asks himself, “What hurt me the most is that now I won’t be able to be a telephone operator like my dad wants me to be. You need to finish school for that.” The future is hurting him the most and what will happen if he actually got expelled from school and does not finish.
The character feels an almost bittersweet sensation here due to his father not being there for him in times when he needs him. It is a tragedy that even though he is relieved that his health is in satisfactory condition, his father is not because of his own choices of an unsatisfactory
Throughout the story, he flashbacks to different points of his life where he shows us how important getting an education is to his family. He really wants to succeed to impress his parents, “What hurt me the most is that I won’t be able to become a telephone operator like Dad wants me to”(185). The school staff doesn’t understand his desire for getting his family out of poverty. The principal just assumes that he doesn’t care about getting an education.
In enduring these complex emotions, this section was the most remarkable part. One of the first apparent emotions the boy experiences with the death of his father is loneliness to make this section memorable. The boy expresses this sentiment when he stays with his father described as, “When he came back he knelt beside his father and held his cold hand and said his name over and over again,” (McCarthy 281). The definition of loneliness is, “sadness because one has no friends or company.”
On September 11, 2001, tragedy struck the city of New York. On that fateful day, two airplanes were hijacked by terrorists and flew straight into the twin towers. Each tower fell completely to the ground, taking thousands of lives with it and injuring thousands more. Not only did that day leave thousands of families without their loved ones, it also left an entire city and an entire country to deal with the aftermath of the destruction.
