The founder of the Alibaba group Jack Ma wasn’t a techie person. He wasn’t good at mathematics, failed two times in high school, and got his first computer only at 33 years old. Jack Ma’s way to becoming the billionaire founder of one of the world’s biggest technology companies came through English.

The author of Ali Baba: The House That Jack Ma Built is Duncan Clark. He was a former Morgan Stanley investment banker and fluent Mandarin speaker. He traces Jack Ma’s story from his early days, through his first Internet venture, Chinapages.com, and then Alibaba.

Growing up in the Chinese province of Hangzhou, Jack Ma went to the Shangri-La hotel as a youngest just to speak with foreigners and improve his English. After few months he became fluent in the language. Jack Ma got his first job as an English teacher at the age of 24. In his early childhood he failed twice in his primary school exams. He failed thrice in his school exams. After his high school he failed thrice the entrance exam to university.
