Baseball began in 1839,by Abner Doubleday. Baseball has been known for being America's pastime. This saying came up in the 1950’s when Joe Dimaggio and Ted Williams went on their historic streaks. For Joe’s 56 game hitting streak or Ted’s .400 batting average. In the beginning of 19th century one would assume that blacks and whites would play baseball together. But that is not the case, baseball was segregated for sixty years from 1887 to 1947. It ended when Jackie Robinson came onto the field in Brooklyn and broke the color line. Even when he came onto the field he still faced hardships.

He was the youngest of five children. He excelled in sports in high school being a four sport athlete. He went to UCLA until he had financial struggles and had to drop out. When World War One started he became a second lieutenant but never saw contact. When the war ended and he came back to baseball he found a spot on the Kansas City monarchs. When Brooklyn Dodgers manager Branch Rickey saw him he quickly put him on his team and he played for the all white Montreal Royals a farm team. But when World War II started he joined the navy and served until it was complete. He returned to baseball in 1946 and won the negro league World Series. Three months after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier he broke the American League color line. He signed a contract with the Cleveland Indians,and one was he was one of the first blacks to win the World Series. In 1954 he was the American League most valuable player with the home run champion and runs batted in leader. He also served as the 2nd black manager.
