His parents are Mallie and Jerry Robinson. He had four siblings Matthew, Willa Mae, Edgar, and Frank Robinson. He was the youngest of them all. He was raised by his single mother. He went to Muir High school and attended University of California, Los Angeles. At UCLA he was the first student to win varsity letters in four sports; basketball, football, baseball, and track. Later he got forced to leave college due to financial issues. After that he went to the army and got charged because he refused to give up his seat on a segregated bus. He was travelling all over Midwest. In 1947 Branch Rickey, the president of the Brooklyn Dodgers talked to Jackie Robinson about joining the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. At the time baseball was segregated but Branch was working to integrate baseball. Jackie Robinson had a great opportunity but he knew that he would have a lot of problems being the only black player on the team. Branch Rickey thought Jackie could handle it without fighting back. Being the only African American on the Brooklyn Dodgers was not easy for Jackie Robinson. He had to deal with the fans and his own teammates. They threatened Jackie and his family and they picked on him, but he didn’t let that stop his success. After his first season on the Dodgers team he was named rookie of the year. He was still taunted by people but they didn’t fear him at all. He was named the NL MVP after 2 years. In 1949 he led the league. He hit .342 in steals with 37.
