Traveling to a different planet and exploring this new place while transforming into a whole new species sounds like a pretty cool adventure. This becomes a reality for many different characters in the movie Avatar. This film is about humans who discover a planet called Pandora and on this planet there are helpful resources but the environment in poisonous to human. So, each human is assigned an avatar, a body of the indigenous people, and with this avatar they can roam the planet freely. To connect the human body with the avatar there are machines set up to connect the human mind with the avatar body. The main character is Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington. The most important part of Avatar that relates to our english class this semester is the use of thresholds. Thresholds are everywhere is this movie, they’re used at transportation, transformation, and much more. Two main examples of thresholds in the movie are when the humans use the machine to transport their minds into the avatar body and when they use their queue to form a tsaheylu bond. A queue is something that the avatars have built into their bodies so they can make personal connections, a tsaheylu bond, with other living animals. Both of these are considered thresholds because they are used to connect to something else, start a new bond with something and begin a journey. The machines that connect a human’s mind to their avatar body works through technology and science. A human gets into a high tech machine where they lie down and simulators transport their thoughts to their avatar body. This machine is considered a threshold because it allows the human to become an avatar at their will. Crossing this threshold from human to avatar allows humans to connect with the native people and explore the new planet safely.
