Who is James Bond? Ian Fleming created the James Bond books and they have persevered to become the longest lasting and top grossing espionage series. The first book of Fleming’s career was Casino Royale, where we see James Bond, also known as 007, facing off with communist agent Le Chiffre. James Bond has quite a simple personality but the thing about Bond was he always succeeded. Coincidentally Bond and Fleming share many personality traits. Fleming and Bond had very similar relationships with women. Later in life with commitments such as marriage and his family Bond became Fleming’s escape from reality (Collins). He used different tactics to draw in Americans, the most important being the use of the CIA. In the 1950s and 1960s when Americans were introduced to James Bond, the CIA had been a top secret agency but Fleming directly addresses the CIA through, Felix Leiter (Wilson Quarterly). During his experiences in WWII while working in British naval intelligence he saw British and American agents working together in the field, the same way Leiter and Bond worked together to defeat the communists (Wilson Quarterly). Felix Leiter, was the American agent from the CIA that directly saved Bond in his time of need during the novel, likely represented General William Donovan. He was one of Fleming’s close friends and also the first Head of the CIA (Wilson Quarterly). Even though Leiter was a key in Bonds victory Fleming leaves no question that the British are the best at Espionage (Wilson Quarterly). He does this by keeping Bond in the spotlight and leaving Leiter to do paperwork (Wilson Quarterly).
