James Dashner wrote his most successful novel, The Maze Runner, in 2009. The novel became very popular two days after the motion picture movie. As seen on the cover the book, (The maze runner) the incredible story unfolds inside a maze surrounded by stone walls covered with ivy. The novel has a simple and easy vocabulary which is ideal for teenaged readers. There are many mysteries and secrets that the author put into the novel that keeps the reader captivated to keep on reading. I have never really been interested in reading any books. You could say that they bored me. I am intrigued that no other books before now captivated me to read. This is the very first book that I have ever read that I legitimately enjoyed. When Thomas first arrived at the glades, he had no idea where he was, surrounded by unrecognizable faces. The unique person he noticed was Gally. Gally looked at Thomas cautiously and said: “I’ve seen you before. Something’s fishy about you showing up here, and I’m going to find out what.” (p.17) But he is not the only one to judge Thomas. In a part of the novel, Thomas finds himself in a graveyard. This character named Ben who has seen him before, attacked Thomas. Alby tried to cool down Ben. He refused to surrender. Alby the so-called leader of the glades started dispensing threats towards Ben. “Ben, stop right now, or you ain’t gonna see tomorrow” (p.72) Ben responds by stating: “I saw him-he’s… he’s bad. We have to kill him! Let me gut him!” But it was not over. After Thomas had saved Alby from a remarkably close death, he went through a process the gladers call the changing. There are foul creatures called grievers that lurk beyond the four walls of the glades. Alby got stung by a griever, the med-jacks injected him with an antidote called “serum”. With that serum in your veins, you suffer through an experience called “the changing”. In the course of the changing, bits and pieces of forgotten memories reappear. This event had changed Alby. He also declared that he had seen Thomas. “I know who you are, seen it. Seen everything. Where we came from, who you are. Who the girl is. I remember the flare.” (p.172) Gally, Ben and now Alby have all been through the changing. They all saw Thomas in their memories, but how is this possible? What does it all mean? Was he hiding something? Those are the type of questions going through my mind after reading those bewildering
