Japanese Education Vs American Education

Education is different across the globe. In many countries, education is very important and the government put a lot of resources into their systems. In Japan particularly their education system is very effective and held to a high standard within their society. The Japanese education system is different than the American education system, all the way from first grade to twelfth grade. There are many positives within their system and some negatives. The Japanese education system is strict and centered more toward younger students in order to help their society grow strong and adhere to their lifestyle. With that being said there is a big emphasis put on elementary education. Arinori Mori, the founder of Japan’s modern education system believes that his “country must move from its third-class position to second-class, and from second-class to first-class, and ultimately to the leading position among all countries of the world. The best way to do this is [by laying] the foundations of elementary education” (Lewis). The society has stuck by that and tries to put many resources into their young. The government tries to makes sure that each school has the same level of facilities (Lewis). To have the same level of facilities they regulate the floor and outdoor space of each to make sure they are equal. To have equal opportunities textbooks are free from elementary to middle school (Lewis). This is so all students have a chance to learn without being held back because they can not afford books. Not only are the textbooks free but every elementary student studies the same material from the same or similar books (Lewis). In high school and middle school there are uniforms all students must wear but in most elementary schools the students do not have to wear a uniform. In some elementary schools, the students will wear a Randoseru, which is a small backpack (School). Once the students get into middle school is when they start to wear a full uniform or in japanese a seifuku. There are different types of uniforms from traditional to more westernized. In a traditional uniform, a boy wears a Gakuran and girls wear a Sailor Fuku (School). These uniforms are based on military uniforms (School). The girls have a sailor like neck-blouse hence the name and the boys wear dark pants and matching a jacket. In the more modern uniforms, there are many different styles. Many include a skirt and some sort of sweater over a blouse for a girl. For a boy, it is a suit which is similar to the Gakuran. Each school has a different style and helps people differ each student from the nearby
