To human beings songs and music in general play a huge part in our lives. In many situations people turn to music. For example when someone is down or upset they might play an upbeat song to try and help their mood. Another example is when someone might be stressed or just unstrung; they turn to music or a certain song to help calm themselves. However music can just as easily induce the same feeling as well as take them away. An example of this is when we hear the “Jaws” theme song and the feeling of danger is immediately felt. In “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck Kino plays certain songs in his head depending on the mood and/or situation. The song of evil is also used in the beginning of the story. It is used to indicate danger or hostility toward Kino and/or his family. “In his mind a new song had come, the Song of Evil, the music of the enemy, of any foe of the family, a savage, secret, dangerous melody, and underneath, the Song of the Family cried plaintively.” (P.5) this is when the scorpion is first noticed by Kino and Juana. Scorpion venom is fatal enough to adults to where the adults would only get sick if the venom were caught in time. However for a baby it could mean death. The scorpion represents the song of evil because it is a threat to the family. Another example of the song of evil is when Kino realizes he is being followed by the trackers. “They were the trackers, they could follow the trail of a big horn sheep in the stone mountains.” (P.73) this represents the song of evil because the trackers are a threat to the …show more content…

To Kino songs are a big part of him. He assoc iated the song of evil to a threatening situation and the song of the family is associated with family like moments such as P.5 Ch.1 when the major events haven’t yet happened and things are just peaceful. The song of the pearl is associated with triumph and beauty however the song changes for the worst to become insane and distorted as Kino states on P. 89 Ch. 5. The song of evil is associated with dangerous situations or situations that threaten the family. Underneath all of these songs however is the importance of family. The pearl’s song is triumphant because it means that Kino can make his family’s life better, and it changes because it eventually brings danger to the family. The song of evil usually represents threats to the family. And the song of the family to Kino is
