Jealousy is one of the 7 deadly sins. In Arthur Miller's play called the Crucible Miller displays jealousy through 3 main characters John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Abigail Williams. These characters go against their beliefs for the people they truly love. Jealousy is an evil sin. In the play John Proctor commits the crime of adultery with Abigail Williams. This act of crime acts heavily against John throughout the play and controls his actions and the jealous interactions between Elizabeth, John's wife and Abigail Williams who was once the Proctors servant. Abigail Williams is a servant to Elizabeth and John Proctor. Abigail is the main antagonist of the play. She is driven by her intense Jealousy of Elizabeth Proctor. One quote from act I page 23. Abigail: “Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be—”
Proctor: angered at himself as well: "You'll speak nothing' of Elizabeth!”

She is a woman of great strength and integrity. Her love for John is tested when she finds out that John and Abigail had an affair. She is willing to forgive John for his indiscretion, but she cannot forget it. “Spoke or silent, a promise is surely made. And she may dote on it now—I am sure she does—and thinks to kill me, then to take my place.” (page 58, act II) Elizabeth points out Abigail’s behavior and accusations. Elizabeth is motivated by jealousy and the benefit Abigail might gain if Elizabeth dies. “John, I counted myself so plain, so poorly made, no honest love could come to me! Suspicion kissed you when I did; I never knew how I should say my love. It was a cold house I kept!” (Act IV). Elizabeth knows about Abigail's manipulation and jealousy drive.
