Jean Watson Caring Definition

One definition of caring is to be kind and show concern for others. A theorist by the name of Jean Watson had her own theory of caring in nursing. She saw caring as “a moral ideal rather than a task-oriented behavior” (p.77). She viewed caring as an interpersonal process in which caring resulted in the needs of human satisfaction. Jean Watson’s approach to caring consists of ten carative factors that are elaborated on. These factors of caring included, “forming humanistic-altruistic value systems, instilling faith-hope, cultivating a sensitivity to self and others, developing a helping-trust relationship, promoting an expression of feelings, using problem-solving for decision-making, promoting teaching-learning, promoting a supportive environment,

Nurses are known to be caring in their profession. Patients feel comforted by their nurses knowing someone is there for them when they feel alone. Family members also gravitate towards the caring of nurses. They often look to nurses for realization and reassurance in their own situations. The interpersonal skills a nurse has confirms a “final endorsement by the patient for the nurse to be perceived as caring” (page 376). Nurses advocate for the patients they care for by tending to their needs. They are the voice of their patients and can ask physicians questions the patient may be scared to ask. Jean Watson’s nursing model “states that nursing is concerned with promoting health, preventing illness, caring for the sick, and restoring health” (page 1.). According to Hogan and Cleary (2013), “The focus is on nursing as the central agent by providing a unique authentic presence with others during times of pain and distress. I always introduce myself to my patients before my busy day starts. I want establish a rapport with them knowing they can trust me with their care. I teach my patients while they are in my care. People in the hospital have high stress levels so it is important to have a supportive environment. I assist my patients with tasks they cannot do on their own such as getting up to the bathroom. I sit in my patient’s room and just give them my time to listen to their concerns. I agree with Jean Watson with caring being a moral ordeal. It takes a special person to take care of sick
