The film’s narrative structure is, at times, difficult to navigate, partly due to Sunny’s dual role as a subject and first-time filmmaker. In Miles Corwin’s novel, And Still We Rise, his first-person speaker, Anita Moultrie, unfailingly proves how proud she is of her community in South-Central Los Angeles. Corwin published the book in April of 2000...... Moultrie teaches her students in order to let them become proud of becoming part of black community in South-Central. Throughout the novel, Corwin consistently advocates against the brutality of racism in relation to black students in inner-city schools by including Moultrie, a teacher at Crenshaw. After reading Isabelle Knockwood’s book Out of the Depths, residential schools really opened my eyes on what really happened to the Aboriginal peoples who were sent there. Knockwood did a very good job explaining what she went through during the long 11 years that she was at the residential school. It’s still hard to believe that human beings would do that to other humans. Knockwood was one of the many people sent to the Indian Residential School in Shubenacadie from 1936 to 1947. She grew up in Wolfville Nova Scotia along with her three brothers and one sister: Rosie, Henry, Joe, and Noel.
‘Be Music, Night’ by Kenneth Patchen is an intriguing piece of literary art. A picture is painted of human interaction with Earth immediately. The manner in which humans fall into her beauty and vastness is apparent in even the first lines of Patchen’s poem, but why is this important? “Be music, night, That her sleep may go Where angels have their pale tall choirs” This choir is brought on by our musical mother nature.

Rose Mary ignores her obligations as a parent and chooses an irresponsible way of life which endangers her children. Rose Mary has never properly matured into adulthood due to her lack of financial stability, bliss ignorance and optimism, and her selfishness nature.
Avni Patel Book Review: Makes Me Wanna Holler The story, “Makes Me Wanna Holler,” is about Nathan McCall's childhood in black neighborhood in late 1900's. He portrays his transitioning from naive young men to changing into gangsters or thugs; and how becoming the “baddest” guy was the “coolest” thing in their community. Over the years, McCall finds himself robbing strangers, shooting white people, and fighting rival groups because this was accepted by this community and committing morally wrong actions were considered to be “cool”. There were many reason this was acceptable in his community. It started off due to the unfair treatment that the whites inflicted upon the African American, which resulted in suppressed anger that the blacks showed.
El Anatsui is an African contemporary artist, who uses art to expresses the culture of Africa post colonialization. Anatsui uses natural materials such as wood, clay, and discarded bottle caps in his artwork. Many of his pieces reflect the Ghanaian culture, by using inspirations from Kente cloth, a traditional West African cloth made from woven textiles with multiple patterns. He uses his art to take a stand by informing people on the issues that Africa currently faces. Anatsui’s art references many historical events from Africa and around the world.
Over the past century, film has served as a powerful means of communication to a global audience and has become a vital part of the contemporary culture in a world that is increasingly saturated by visual content. Due to the immediacy and the all-encompassing nature of film, the process of watching a film, is widely perceived to be a passive activity by the general masses. However, quoting Smith in his article about the study of film, “nothing could be further from the truth.” The study and understanding of film as an art form enhances the way we watch and appreciate films. It requires the audience's active participation and interaction with the film in order to fully comprehend the directors' intention behind every creative decision.
White Fang is a novel written by Jack London; it is the sequel to Call of the Wild. White Fang is a fiction book that was set in the 1890’s. The story setting took place in Canada during the Klondike gold rush. The story setting is in third person. White Fang is a well written book, but I did not like it as much as Call of The Wild.
Baz Luhrmanns contribution to the art of film, brings about a flamboyant and revitalizing side to the industry. Through the use of cinematic language, his story telling techniques and belief in the theatrical cinema come to life. Baz Luhrmann has a very distinctive directing approach with particular techniques that define his style. He presents his films as if he were telling a story, which he invites you into. His stories are simple and he tends to give away the ending at the beginning of the film, which intrigues you to find out more about what had taken place.
Baz Luhrmann is widely acknowledged for his Red Curtain Trilogy which are films aimed at heightening an artificial nature and for engaging the audience. Through an examination of the films Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby, the evolution and adaptation of his techniques become evident. Luhrmann’s belief in a ‘theatrical cinema’ can be observed to varying degrees through the three films and his choice to employ cinematic techniques such as self-reflexivity, pastiche and hyperbolic hyperbole. The cinematic technique of self-reflexivity allows a film to draw attention to itself as ‘not about naturalism’ and asks the audience to suspend their disbelief and believe in the fictional construct of the film.
Baz Luhrmann is known world wide for his eccentric and flamboyant film-making style. Luhrmann’s signature bright colours, fast-paced camera-cuts and zooms, and bold costumes are all key characteristics of his films and assist Luhrmann in putting forward the themes and motifs he regards as essential in each of his works. However, Luhrmann still receives much criticism for not staying true to the original source material of the stories he introduces to the big screen. One fails to realize the fact that, “Luhrmann’s films are not so much adaptations as re-imaginings” (Vogue Magazine) and through analysis of his various techniques, as well as his overall cinematic language in his films, “Strictly Ballroom” (1992), “Romeo + Juliet” (1996) and “The Great Gatsby”, one can see this clearly, through Luhrmann’s evolution as a director.
