The path that the organism travels between them is in terms of development usually pretty predictable. The organism grows, matures and sexually matures, grows older and dies. The steps in this process are irreversible. Once an organism is sexually mature, it can no longer return to the stage where it was for example a larva or a toddler. At least, that is what was assumed. Indeed, there is an organism that this whole development does not belong to. It is the jellyfish Turritopsis Dohrnii. The jellyfish can after sexual maturity, go back to the first stage of its development. It gives him an interesting nickname: the immortal jellyfish. Because the animal can relive the cycle over again, it can theoretically forever stay alive. Fertilized eggs of T. dohrnii grow out of polyps that are part of a polyp colony. From these polyps arise jellyfish that are sexually mature in about two weeks. These jellyfish again produce eggs or sperm. Many other jellyfish die after they have secured posterity. But T. dohrnii is different. The jellyfish can, after it has reached sexual maturity, return into the stage of the polyp. It does not matter whether the jellyfish has been a jellyfish for a while or just turned into one: he can always come back, as research …show more content…

That means - in short - that cells from one type of cell change into the other type. The cells hereby change their whole composition and function. That in itself is not that remarkable in the animal kingdom. There are other animals that can change the composition and function of cells, for example in order to regenerate a particular body part. The lizard does that for example, after he has lost his tail. However, the performance of T. dohrnii is special: the jellyfish does change just one part of the body, but does that to his entire body. Also the jellyfish does not change in just a snap in the fingers. Research shows that the jellyfish can be repeated again young. That is why the jellyfish is also known as "immortal". Biologists prefer to speak of biological immortality. And that is indeed a better term. Because enough T. dohrnii jellyfishes daily pass out or even pass away. For example, because predators catch them or because they are sick. Future Advancements of Immortality: Project 2045 Mankind has turned into a consumer society standing at the edge of a total loss of the conceptual guidelines necessary for further evolution. The majority of people are almost exclusively absorbed in merely maintaining their own comfortable
