Jephthah
Jephthah was a judge who appears in chapter eleven of Judges. He is one of twelve judges in the book of judges. At the time of Jephthah, the Israelites were under the oppression of the ammonites. Israel was under the oppression of the ammonites for nearly 18 years. In chapter 10, we find that in about verses 10-13, God shows Israel the error of their ways by basically saying that hed be there with them, but he would no longer save them. When they call out to Him, he then lists off all of the people that he has saved them from, and how they continue to abandon him and worship other gods. He does not heed the warning of Jephthah. After this, Jephthah makes a vow to God that if he delivers the ammonites into his hands, he will offer whoever greets him when he returns as a burnt offering unto the Lord as a sign of thanks. His daughter greeted him, and he had no other children. It seems as though he thought it would have been an easy task, but it was much harder than he thought. He then gives her two months that she had asked for. So she went into the mountains and wept with her companions since she would not continue his line. The first lesson we learned was that that no matter how much we turn away from God, He will always come through for us. This can be seen in verse 13 of chapter 10. He shows His relentless Grace by sending Jephthah to deliver them from the ammonites. He did this even after multiple times of abandonment from the Israelites. This is just one example of how God's relentless pursuit of His people breaks all barriers and He will deliver us in the darkest of times. The second lesson we learned was to never cut someone out of your life. You'll never know when you may need them. Jepthah's brother kicked him out of the Gilead.
