Between 1887 and the mid 1960’s , the Jim Crow Laws were not only a series of anti- Black laws, it started to mould American society and became a way of life. African Americans were reduced to second class citizens and the danger of segregation was heavily emphasised. Segregation was seen throughout all aspects of life, and was particularly evident in baseball. In Eighteen-eighty-three, Moses Fleetwood Walker became the first professional black baseball player who played for a white major league team and joined the American Association.
Most slaves lived on enormous plantations that stretched all the way across the South. Field slaves were slaves that la-bored in a little group controlled by what was called a slave driver, who was usually another slave worker. Women usually worked as cooks, maids, and nurses for both the master’s and mistress’s children. Slaves were very well known for being skilled workers, working as carpenters, blacksmiths, and coopers. The younger female slaves generally worked as babysitters for the smaller infants or just helped with small chores around the house.
One of the Jim Crow laws states that “A black male could not offer any part of his body to a White woman because he risked being accused of rape”(a). Tom Robinson would know of this rule and would not even shake hands with Mayella, let alone kiss her. He would know that if anyone saw him going into her house he could be accused of rape. However, if he didn’t enter her house when she asked, he would be accused of not showing “superiority to blacks in all important ways”, another Jim Crow law. Since, Tom knows of these rules he makes the decision to enter her house and show respect, but when he see’s Mr. Ewell approaching her house he runs in fear of being accused of rape.
Most of the Jim Crow laws were put in place around 1800’s and 1900; most of

1. The Jim Crow Laws were a set of laws concerning racism in the South of the United States. These laws segregated black people from white people in every part of daily life. They were created by the local government. The local government was usually the state.
Although studies prove that all ethnicities use drugs at about the same rate, the drug laws are enforced overwhelmingly against people of color. Alexander posits that this is not an accident and, rather, the war on drugs is purposefully the latest incarnation of America’s racial caste system. The language had to change because discrimination again a person based on color is illegal; however, Alexander lays out a plethora of evidence to show that drug-war rhetoric is used to oppress people of color the exact same way as Jim Crow laws once were. Instead, of explicit discriminatory laws, Fourth Amendment rights were disintegrated in the name of drug interdiction; there was a rise in exploitation of asset-forfeiture laws; and police forces appear
5th Hour Cause and Effect Essay Jim Crow laws The Jim Crow laws were unfair and unjust to all African-Americans by making them unequal. The Jim Crow laws are laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States. It used the term separate but equal, even though conditions for African Americans were always worst than their white counterparts. They could not eat at the same restaurant as white people, they could not used the same restrooms, and they couldn't even use the same drinking fountain.
These Jim Crow laws that are currently being passed are absurd and uncivil! No human is more important than any other human, meaning that we do not need special spacing for whites or blacks. All human beings should be treated equally TOGETHER and should be able to interact with each other without any hesitation. There is not one valid reason as to why humans should be separated by their race, color, religion or gender. These laws just create more anger throughout the country than there already is and at the moment, we need more peace within ourselves.
After reading/viewing the Jim Crow pieces, I conclude that the Jim Crow Laws were ways for South and border states to uphold racism and evade federal laws. I believe this, in part, because of the historical image I viewed. The print portrays a ragged man with a manic smile plastered upon his face (V. E.). The man, who was African-American, wears ragged clothes, while animals walk in formal attire (V. E.). I believe that this depiction was implying the worth of the man.
By the implementation of the inferiority among black people compared to their white counterparts, instilled a vitriol that was and still is extremely devastating to a more equal future. Shortly following the civil war, the south being bitter in the aftermath of surrender, took it among themselves to create the segregation laws. Laws that came to be known as the incredibly devious Jim Crow laws. These insidious Laws were enforced by the former Confederate southern states, which began in the late 1870's and early 1880's, that actually made it legal to segregate blacks from whites. The Jim Crow laws confined legal rights of black people to be designated their own colored public facilities, as well as their schools, even to water drinking fountains.
In many large urban areas in the United States, the majority of working-age African American men have criminal records. It was reported in 2002 that, in the Chicago area, if you take into account prisoners, the figure is nearly 80%” (Alexander, page nuber?). The Jim Crow Law was a set of state and local laws enacted in the Southern and border states of the United States between 1876 and 1965. The laws mandated the segregation of public facilities and services, such as schools, public transportation, restrooms, and drinking fountains, based on race, in order to maintain white supremacy and racial segregation in the South.
Let’s start with the Jim Crow laws, shall we? The Jim Crow laws basically stated that African Americans should and will continue to live in poverty, all while the white people stripped them of their natural born rights. The African Americans were forced to drink from different water fountains, sit in the back of a bus, eat at different restaurants, and they weren’t even allowed to live in certain homes or areas, all because they has a surplus of melanin in their skin. The Jim Crow laws, luckily, were abolished in 1964. Which brings me to my next point.
Jim Crows Laws actually had a huge effect on Americans in their daily lives. All colored and whites were split up everywhere. If a sign said white only coloreds would get in trouble if they go into that place. Whites had way nicer things from hotels, theatres, drinking fountains, restaurants... etc. Colored people had it really hard every day living like this.
