Plessy vs. Ferguson was a case that attempted to prove that the Jim Crow lawintervened with the fourteenth amendment in May 18, 1896. To give you a brief description about the Fourteenth Amendment, The Fourteenth Amendment was ratified on July 9, 1868 in the US Constitution. The Fourteenth Amendment broad goal was to ensure that the Civil Rights Act passed in 1866 would remain valid ensuring that "all persons born in the United States..." people that are born in the United States of America are given citizenship. Also, born citizenship provides "full and equal benefit of all laws."
Jim Crow was not a person, it was a series of laws that imposed legal segregation between white Americans and African Americans in the American South. It promoting the status “Separate but Equal”, but for the African American community that was not the case. African Americans were continuously ridiculed, and were treated as inferiors. Out of all the texts i analyzed in this unit so far, my favorite would have to be the Jim Crow Laws. I personally liked this one more due to the chaos and absurdity of the laws. I took an interest in it and i was most entertained while writing the prompt and while reading about it. Jim Crow laws are about black people not having rights, people used these laws in To Kill a Mockingbird. Lots of racism is in two court cases, one was real, and one is fictional from a book. Jim Crow laws, mob mentality, and racism all were a part of these cases. These racist laws were a big part of the book To Kill a Mockingbird. As stated on page 179, “The schools for the white children and the schools for Negro children shall be conducted separately.” In my opinion Negro children are being treated like trash because whatever is left for them to use as their school supplies, they must use it without complaints because they might be punished. This shows to me that even childrens were treated like disgusting creatures during this era, this also proves that the Jim Crow Laws are very inhumane for it abuses the rights of those that are innocent. Finally, In the Jim Crow website, I learned that Negroes that tried to fight the unjust or broke the “law” were lynched or killed in a different way.
How the Jim Crow Laws Oppressed African Americans Racism has been a prominent issue throughout american history. It started when American Colonists traveled to Africa and kidnapped people, bringing them back to America and putting them through extremely harsh conditions. As time progressed slavery had changed its course and the North won the Civil War, and President Abraham Lincoln announced the abolishment of slavery. The segregation of schools based on a students skin color was in place until 1954. On May 17th of that year, during the Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education, it was declared that separate public schools for black and white students was unconstitutional. However, before this, the segregation of schools was a common practice throughout the country. In the 1950s there were many differences in the way that black public schools and white public schools were treated with very few similarities. The differences between the black and white schools encouraged racism which made the amount of discrimination against blacks even greater.
Jim Crow Laws are laws that segregated blacks from the whites and it also took a lot of rights from the blacks. After the reconstruction the whites were afraid of the blacks taking over, so they created these laws. After these laws took place the blacks were disrespected and limited rights. The whites wanted these laws so the blacks couldn’t take over the world.
