The Use of Satire in Dark Comedy Throughout the film “JoJo Rabbit”, Taika Waititi uses satirical humor in different ways to express the dark realities of Nazi Germany. He has a unique approach that allows for the use of witty humor to bring light to dark situations, and also allows for the viewer to confront the unfortunate events of the past. Waititi's use of satirical humor in "JoJo Rabbit" commonly serves as a reminder of the power that comedy has to address even the most depressing and serious of subject matter. Though it involves less use of satire, an important part of the story relates to the theme of standing up for yourself, and making your own choices. In this scene, she represents resilience and hope despite her current position. In the scene where Elsa is discovered by JoJo in his dead sister's room, she maintains her composure and confronts JoJo's prejudices with dignity and strength. She also stands up for herself, rather than just cowering. 1:01:34. Elsa's reaction to being discovered by Jojo in the hidden compartment can serve as a powerful symbol of resilience and defiance against her oppression. Despite the dangers faced by being found by a member of the Hitler Youth, she stays composed and doesn’t show her fear. This act of resilience showcases her bravery and desire to stand up for herself. Elsa's bold response to being found by Jojo shows her strong will to keep her dignity despite danger. This is able to reinforce the movie's message of empathy, kindness, and the human spirit's strength in tough times. Taika Waititi uses humorous exaggeration and absurdity of reality to employ satire to poke fun at the blind loyalty and absurdity of Nazi fanaticism in "JoJo Rabbit.” In the scene where Captain K and other Nazi officers are discussing the injuries they have experienced in battle, they have an extremely nonchalant, careless attitude, they also attempt to one up each other
