One quote she gave me this past week, strongly stood out to me which was; “I could share all that I have done and the accomplishments that currently make up my resume, but I believe what truly matters at the end of the day is the question, "did I love others today? " Love 's root is not a feeling, it is an action. It can be shown through a variety of simple ways, such as the sacrifice of my time or a completion of a task for another. And when you can show this way of living life to another and they take it on for themselves, this is what I call success.”. It is so obvious especially in this quote that she determines success different from the rest of us.
Within the text, Sotomayor explains how she has worked hard to get into prestigious schools, and how she has gotten to this point in her career despite having to face adversity. Sotomayor declares, “My father a factory worker with a third grade education, passed away when I was nine years old. On her own, my mother raised my brother and me” (21). By explaining the Sotomayor had lost her father at such a young age , yet was still able to make it into prestigious schools such as Princeton and Yale, the audience will feel empathy towards Sotomayor since she lost her father at such a young age, yet was still able to pass over such adversity. Within the speech, Sotomayor is able to utilize the audience’s empathy in order to persuade them that she is an optimal candidate for next supreme court justice, Sotomayor also uses an optimistic tone when convincing the senate judiciary committee that she is the best candidate for supreme court
In the second paragraph she states, “Eventually a fortunate few will find their way into educational repair shops-adult literacy programs, such as the one where I teach basic grammar and writing.” This gives her a tremendous amount of credibility and expertise in this speech. Not only does she gain credibility by working in the education field, but she gains credibility because she works with the kids that have been failed by the education system. In the third paragraph she talks about how she found out first hand with her own son that when a teacher threatens to flunk a student they work harder and obtain the skills they need to
The essence of the speech relies on Chisholm’s fundamental ability and her own personal
The ones that were in attendance to the 2016 Music Video Awards were celebrities, people that support him, and also people that do not support him. Some of these people included his wife Kim Kardashian-West, a previous girlfriend Amber Rose, and Taylor Swift whom are all addressed in his speech. There were also many people who listened on television but did not attend the actual event. This would normally affect the speech in making it persuasive based.
People remember this has a great speech because what she represents in this speech is hope, gratefulness, and guidance. Also the rhetorical devices she uses makes the speech that much more personal. Her use of an apostrophe or using an imaginary person was a great addition to the speech. She stats “ where after all do universal human rights begin? In a small places, close to home, so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world of the individual person; the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends”(adoption).
If I were asked to get the attention of my peers for a speech, I would first consider my audience because I have different groups of people I consider peers. I would also take into consideration the topic of the speech and utilize an appropriate attention grabber. For example, if I am giving a motivational speech, I might use the word courage. I could either incorporate that word into a powerful quote or tell a story about how courage “changed my life” or why it is a “necessary virtue” on the path to success. I think the most important part, in addition to the attention grabber, is to keep the audience’s attention throughout the speech.
There are excellent examples of that on graduation speeches. Ed Helms, famous actor, gave an effective speech on the Cornell class of 2014 because he knew who their audience was, he used correctly
The audience of the speech is intended for everyone, or everyone that has been through a significant tragedy and identifies themselves with that tragedy. In the opening of her speech she says that whenever she meets someone she is instantly thinking about if they are a survivor of some kind of trauma and also if they are going to identify with that trauma. She makes the argument that we should not be defined by the tragedy 's that we have experienced but we should be defined by the person we have become or are becoming. Jarvis uses humor throughout her speech.
Her speech is a motivational speech for the graduates but as well a form of occasion speech because it has experience, comfort, empathy, and humor. She gives encouraging words to make them proud of their achievements. The target audience is the graduates, their families, and the teachers. Her tone in the speech
In Barbara Bush’s speech at the Wellesley college commencement in 1990. I believe that her main ideas are to remind the students that success is not defined by social expectations by unique personal goals when listening to her speech! I also feel that she is warning us on labeling others that we don’t know much about, that when she starts to talk about Alice Walker the famous writer of (The Color Purple) Bush also used demographic, the audiences gender age, and cultured, psychographic analysis which focuses on their beliefs values and life experiences and situational analysis, which also focuses on the setting and mood of the audience. Now with her examples she uses a story by Robert Fulghum about a young pastor finding himself in charge of
Maria was a senior in high school. Her plans after high school was to go to lone star college to do 2 years of basics, then transfer to Sam Houston University. Maria was excited to graduate high school because she was going to be to be the first child of her family to get a high school diploma but also be the first one of her family to go to college. Maria had big dreams.
I also want to incorporate how she can give the speech to such large audience. I have a public speaking fear and learning these tips as well as taking public speaking class has definitely helped me. What Amy Cuddy tried to portray throughout her video presentation is that not only does our body language affect how other people view us, but also how we view ourselves. Whether we stand in powerful or weak poses, whether we spread our or make our body take up as little space as possible, can affect our level of success.
Then by appealing to pathos, she reminds the world of the horrendous events that occur every day as a result of the inability of girls to speak up for themselves. Finally, she ties in a sense of hope through a shift in tense, as to present that together, everyone can aid in the success of the program in the end. Overall, Michelle Obama’s speech unites the world in supporting the cause for not only a woman’s right to education but also the right to speak up against those who shame them for being a part of the female
But then mentions that she learned the values of "honesty, integrity, dignity, decency, gratitude and humility" and that if she
