Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician, during the Baroque period. Bach’s compositions include: the Toccata & Fugue in D minor, 2 passions, the magnificent Mass in B minor, as well as over three hundred cantatas. Johann Sebastian Bach was the eighth and youngest child. He was born into a very musical family. Bach’s father was the director of the town’s musicians. His father most likely taught him violin and the basics of music theory. All of Bach’s uncles were professional musicians, whose posts included: church organists, court chamber musicians, and composers. One of his uncles, Johann Christoph Bach was known to have introduced Johann Sebastian Bach to the organ. An older second cousin of Bach’s, Johann Ludwig Bach, was a well-known composer and violinist. Being born into this richly musical family had an astonishing effect on Bach’s future. In 1694, when Bach was only around ten years old, his mother died. Eight months later, followed by his mother’s death, Bach’s father died.
