John Calvin
What and How

John Calvin was known for many things and people ether loved him or hated him. To some he was a man of the century who was the mark of a Christian and to others he was regarded as the unopposed dictator of Geneva. Calvin was a Reformation prophet, priest, pastor and theologian. At first he was a reluctant servant of God and in the twelfth issue of Christian History Magazine he is quoted as saying “as by a dreadful curse, which I felt to be as if God had from heaven laid his mighty hand upon me to arrest me.”(Calvin, 1523). This was uttered shortly after Farel convinced a young John Calvin to return to Geneva and serve the cause of the Reformation. Piety is the virtue of religious devotion and spirituality. A couple of ways that one’s piety can be demonstrated by ether devotion to God or through religious observance. There really is no limit to how someone can show piety; and everyone may have their own feelings as to what it can mean. John Calvin had his own concept of what piety meant, his idea of piety was analyzed in The Cambridge Companion for John Calvin. The author, Joel R. Beeke writes:
Calvin’s concept of piety (Lat. pietas) is rooted in the knowledge of God and includes attitudes and actions that are directed to the adoration and service of God. In addition, his pietas includes a host of related themes, such as filial piety in human relationships, and respect and love for the image of God in human beings.
