The American Dream: Making Dreams a Reality Accomplishing feats most people can only dream of, John Davison Rockefeller was the main force behind the Standard Oil Company, which rose to impact America’s economy and monopolize the oil industry. Although he started off with humble beginnings, he worked diligently and persistently to achieve his goals and dreams. On July 8, 1839, Rockefeller was born on a farm in Richford, New York. He was one of six children in a strict family that taught him to always come out on top (“JDR Sr. Biographical Sketch” 1). His mother was uncompromising when it came to discipline and conservation, and his father taught him harsh lessons that would benefit him later in life (Segall 14-15). In addition to this, he decided to pursue philanthropy, something he had supported since the first day he began making money. Rockefeller’s passion for charity led him to donate to many causes he truly believed in. He also established the General Education Board, the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, the Rockefeller Foundation, and much more. Advancements were also made in medicine, education, food production, and many other fields because of Rockefeller’s generosity (“JDR Sr. Biographical Sketch” 1). The steps required to reach it are much easier said than done. One factor that might prevent people from achieving The Dream is personal disadvantages. Even though there are people like Rockefeller who have managed to work their way to the top, not everyone possesses the mindset and skills necessary for this feat. Furthermore, obstacles such as coming from a poor background impede the process of reaching The American Dream. Rockefeller was able to succeed despite this, but others that start off in a similar situation might not be able to persevere like he did.
