Kennedy was a symbol of hope for most Americans, and many citizens looked up to him. In fact, Kennedy used a lot of television so everyone knew his face well. Moreover, Kennedy was, at 43, the youngest president, and therefore many Americans were not confident about his abilities to lead the nation. However, President Kennedy is able to portray himself as a trustworthy leader by referring to God as a higher entity and quelling the fears of people.

Kennedy was giving this speech after winning by a very small margin of votes so he was trying to unite the people of the United States and show he was the correct choice for the president.
