John Keats was a romantic poet who published only 54 poems in his lifetime. Keats was born in the City of London on October 31st, 1795. Keats died at 25 years of age of Tuberculosis. Though Keats didn’t live very long, he still accomplished many romantic poems and 3 novels.
Keats suffered from anxiety that started at a young age, some believe this is because his mother (Frances Jennings Keats) left the family after the divorce of Frances and his father (Thomas Keats). Not long after the divorce, his father died and this is when John Keats started to get into the arts. Keats first published piece of work was “Endymion,” a story about a greek myth of a shepherd. Keats had to overcome a lot of criticism from this piece in order to become the talented poet he was.
Keats was infatuated with the idea of Negative Capability. Negative Capability is when the human brain exceeds “social norms” or what human minds are thought to allow. Keats looked at the world differently than other, he felt as if the world is this anarchic place. He could only get a peace of mind through his work.
Keats went on a walking tour in Scotland and Northern England in the summer of 1818. He had went back home later on that year to look after and care for his brother who had fallen very sick with tuberculosis. After putting a dent into his career he met the love of his life (Fanny Brawne). Keats never did marry Brawne, he did propose, but was waiting to marry Brawne because he wanted to financially support her and build his name up in poetry. He died before he could do so. They had met at Wentworth Place in October or November, Keats who was at first not interested in her high spirits, outspoken attitude, and strong thoughts and opinions, but was eventually drawn to her by her beauty and of course developed a strong love for her.
