Hero: a guiding or directing head, as of an army, movement, or political group. One time when leaders were popular was during the American Revolutionary War. The purpose of the war fought against the British was to obtain independence. America was able to beat the British because of many leaders. Three such leaders were Nancy Hart, John Paul Jones, and Deborah Sampson.
Nancy Hart proved herself a hero when a group of Tories invaded her home. One evening, a “Liberty Boy” had come running through the woodland from a group of Tories. Jones joined the Continental navy during the American Revolution, enjoying his greatest successes in international waters. ( “John paul jones wins in english water) The serapis was escorting forty british merchants. The Bonhomme Richard grappled with the Serapis September 23 1779 at the coast of england. With the two vessels lashed together, the British captain asked Jones if he wished to surrender and received the famous reply, “I have not yet begun to fight.”Jones’ ship was not as well armed as the Serapis and had less experience.(Kent 99)Early in the battle a shell detonated powder kegs on the Bonhomme Richard and killed many. Survivors fled below decks. Jones locked the ships together with grappling hooks.there was three more hours of long hard fighting.Jones outlasted his advisory and forced a surrender. An estimated 150 americans were killed or injured.When the Serapis surrendered, Jones and his men boarded her while his own vessel sank.
