In 1925, the Tennessee legislature passed the Butler Act which banned the teaching of the evolution of mankind in public schools. John T Scope, a football coach and, mathematics teacher, was accused of teaching evolution as a substitute biology teacher. In this re-trial, I hold a position as a jury. Several witnesses had supportive arguments and evidences. Harry Shelton from the prosecution side and Henry F Osborn from the defense side presented the most convincing evidences respectively as Harry’s evidence presented was very acrimonious and unpleasing to John T Scopes and Henry F Osborn provided valid and scientific information to us and the judge. There were also a lot of valuable aspects during this trial, devoting to our final judgment. …show more content…
Being the most important witness in the prosecution side, he made an accusation that John T Scopes taught him about evolution. The prosecution attorney then could state that John T Scopes was convicted and guilty of the crime committed. The defense side might argue about the law but could no longer claim that John did not teach evolution in school. The statements raised by Harry Shelton were very definite and potent. According to what he said, he warned John T Scopes that it’s illegal and not proper to teach evolution in school. This could further add to John’s crime. As a jury, I undoubtedly think that John T Scopes intentionally violated the law even after being warned by his student. Harry’s evidence was very disadvantageous and unfavorable to the defense side. One of the reasons why Butler Law needs to be established is the unstable society and system caused by contradictory theories. And Harry was affected negatively as he was over thinking, stressed and had problem sleeping. This reinforced the purpose of the Butler Law. He harshly claimed that this crime is the same as teaching a kid to smoke. The teaching of evolution would then be regarded as …show more content…
And expectedly, as an expert witness, he provided knowledgeable and scientific proofs to support the defense side. First of all, he stated his neutrality towards religion, making sure that his evidence is definitely unbiased. Osborn started his delivery with his belief that our ancestors are not ape-like, instead they are more human than ape. As a staff in the museum, he urged the investigation and exhibition of murals, habitat dioramas, and dinosaur mounts. His mentioning of the existence of dinosaurs was conducive to denying the bible. As written in bible, animals were created on the sixth day before humans were created on the seventh day. In the pragmatic examination and observation of scientists, there were dinosaurs long before humans appeared. Bones, habitats ,etc were all realistic evidences for the theory of dinosaurs. He also raised the point of Pangaea. Humans were all the same, however, after the breaking up of the continents, evolution happened and some people had darker skin. The theory of Pangaea was first discovered by Alfred Wegener. It was orginally ridiculed but later climate, fossil plants and animals, glaciations proved this theory and it became widely known and recognized. It is totally relevant and meaningful to the theory of evolution. Although there were other professionals in this trial, some of the information was vague or subjective. For example, Kirtley F Mather answered the
