Kansas Vs. Darwin In 1859 Charles Darwin proposed the theory of Evolution which stated that humans evolved from primates. After spending five years in southern islands, Darwin speculated that one species will eventually grow into a new species. He wrote a book called the “Origin of Species” and it was a quick sell out. Today it is “recognized as a leading work in natural philosophy and in the history of mankind” (Landry). Today it seems as if there is a price to pay when talking about this topic in public, especially in school classrooms, as many teachers and parents argue that the Bible’s literal interpretation of human development is supreme. Challenges facing the theory were found relevant in 23 states as well as seven foreign countries. In 2004 a challenge was brought up by the Kansas State Board of Education. Is evolution a matter of a theory or is it the subject of “true scientific controversy” (Tamblyn)? The first hearing was held and nobody that supported evolution would testify. Many people believe that they are not related to monkeys and many claim that their old teachers were Christian and spoke out in class disagreeing with the science curriculum stating that human evolved from primates. The hearings confused the public and were “intended to mislead and were reflective of religious views, not science.” There were several differing opinions during the hearing and little agreement. After the hearing, people of the state of Kansas believe that Kansas will be held as one of the forerunners in science (Film). Revisions were made and finally accepted by the Kansas Board of Education on November 8, 2005. They are as
