What’s the definition of the word “hero?’’ Many think it’s when a person does something heroic. But, have they really went into depth with the meaning of this word? A hero is someone who shows courage without even thinking about the dangers they could put themselves into. That is what Johnny Cade did. Saving people's lives without thinking of the prices he’ll have to pay. Johnny is the biggest hero because he helped save people, did everything he could to keep everything in place, and through all of that, he didn’t think of what could’ve happened to him. Looking at Johnny Cade, you wouldn’t believe he was a hero. Johnny was nowhere near brave. He was known as the “gang's pet”. You may ask yourself, how can a gang member be referred to as a pet? Well, Johnny was like a “lost puppy that has been kicked too many times. Hurt, since the day he was born, bullied and beaten. Johnny was hurt by his parents, family, and the Socs. It put him over the edge. He felt so intimated that he had to carry a switchblade to feel secure. But, he found a way to get rid of that terror and save Ponyboy, knowing how horrified he was by the Socs. Using that very switchblade, he killed a Soc named Bob. Why? Johnny also saved people emotionally. By doing this, he would listen to what they would say, not interrupting them. Johnny would also understand and accept them for feeling that way. He was the glue that kept everything in place. Johnny kept everyone from getting into chaos. The Greasers even said that without Johnny they “would have probably already beaten each other up.” For example, when he was getting ready to die, and the Greaser and Socs were getting ready to have a rumble.
