Integrity is having moral standards or a set of principles to live by that show good character and decency towards fellow people (Integrity). Sports players are among the people society sees as those who are expected to have integrity. Despite the fact that Johnny Manziel is a talented football player, and has been since high school, and was drafted into the NFL at an early age, he does not show the quality of integrity because he has partied with alcohol, which once caused damages to a Los Angeles home worth $30,000-showing that he is irresponsible, has had issues with sportsmanship on and passion off of the field, and has been accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend-a major indecency to another person. While not all people who party or …show more content…
Back in 2013 during a game as an Aggie, Manziel received “a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty [and was] chewed out by Kevin Sumlin for [his] stupid actions…” (Uthman). Whatever he had done to receive that penalty cost not only a sense of shame on him, but it cost his team yards on the field, which could make it hard to win the game. It also makes Manziel look like he’s showing off when it is unnecessary, which is narcissistic because he is not playing a one person sport. Manziel also was said by a fellow Cleveland Browns player, Josh McCown, that he “displayed enough passion when he was around the Browns facility, but obviously not enough when he was away from it” (Cabot). McCown was aware of what Manziel did when he was off the field, including the assault charge, and said he was able to speak from experience and says Manziel should realize what he wants from his career and get the most out of it (Cabot). It might not be possible to live the game of football when off the field, but knowing one’s expectations and one’s motivation is what leads to success. In order to have a successful career, one needs to have a passion for it and uphold it at all times. This is not necessarily being a football player all the time in Manziel’s …show more content…
Manziel was “accused of hitting his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowely several times while driving from an uptown Dallas bar back to her home in Fort Worth” (Manziel Indicted). This is classified as “a misdemeanor assault charge for family violence” and can put Manziel in jail for a year and cost him $4,000 (Johnny Manziel’s). Whatever put Manziel in the mindset to act this way towards his now ex-girlfriend ended up costing him endorsements and his spot on the Cleveland Browns team (Cabot & Johnny Manziel’s). Acting indecent towards another human being is frowned upon in society and is taught as a wrong thing to do since childhood. The person on the receiving end of the indecency also does not deserve what they receive in most cases, and Crowely was one of those that did not earn the treatment she had from Manziel. No matter what someone believes, the basic rights of all people are supported and one of those rights is to not be subjected to violence, especially from a supposed loved one. Manziel acted indecent towards his ex-girlfriend, an innocent person, and by doing so forfeited the quality of being a decent
