Even though José Julián Martí Pérez, better known as José Martí, is not known worldwide, he is considered one of the most important heroes and poets in Cuba. He fought bravely for Cuban independence and died for his country. He is considered the "Apostle of Cuban Independence" in Cuba. He is studied every year in school. We celebrate his birth and his death- at 42- every year. Yes, he has been imprisoned and yes, he was repatriated to Spain, but until you know the whole story, you should stop jumping to conclusions. He was arrested and incarcerated in the national jail with an accusation of treason at 16. Why? It all happened in October 1869, when Martí and his best friend (Fermín Valdés Domíngez) were laughing in Valdes’ house, Spanish volunteers
