Undocumented The Vargas family brought Jose to the US because the US had more opportunities. At first, their main goal for Jose was to get a regular job and one day make enough money to send to the Philippines. However, Lolo underestimated the potential Jose had. Jose was a bright student and at the age of 16, Jose had dreams of becoming a journalist. Jose studied hard and despite the fact he was unable to gain financial aid, he was still able to achieve his dream. I feel like the family had good intentions. The grandparents wanted to help Jose’s mother out because she was a young mother who had difficulties finding a job. She was a single parent and had no financial support from the father. As I mentioned before, the grandparents just wanted Jose to have a better education and a better life. Getting into a good college is a very difficult and being undocumented makes that task 10 times more difficult. When Jose found out about his undocumented status, his views on America and his family instantly changed. At first, he felt betrayed by his grandparents. He also started to show resentment towards his mom. Despite the fact Jose came to the US illegally, Jose still believes he is an American. He even said, “I am an American, I just don’t have the right papers.” I agree with Jose, I think he deserves to be a US citizen. His accomplishments as a journalist and his work for the Washington Post speaks for itself. Jose paid his taxes and he is not a criminal. I really appreciate the fact that he represents the immigration
