Silence or Art? Art can be defined as “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power” (Oxford Dictionary). Art can be found almost anywhere and everywhere at the exact same time. Whether it’s in a scenic setting, in melodic music, or even in the simplest of paintings, art’s been prevalent all throughout history and is even found dating back to around 60,000 years ago. Artists create art for various reasons, whether it’s for entertainment or even as a form of expression.

In Lalita Tademy’s Cane River, a slave family struggles to survive through their enslavement and the aftermaths of the Emancipation Proclamation. Throughout both of these stories, white people are disrespectful to the black people despite them deserving respect. Occasionally, this disrespect festers and turns into unjustified hatred. Through the gloom of death in The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man and Cane River, one can see how prejudice is devastating to everything that stands in its path.

Comparison of Symbols in “The Necklace” and “The Birthmark” In both Guy de Maupassant's short story “The Necklace” and Nathaniel Hawthorne's “The Birthmark”, the theme of vanity as downfall is very prominent. Maupassant's use of the birthmark and Hawthorne's use of the necklace as symbols offer direct evidence to this theme. My goal in this paper is to compare and contrast the two main symbols of the short stories in question using evidence from the source material. “The Birthmark” involves Georgiana, the young and beautiful wife of a scientist, who has a birthmark the shape of a tiny, red human hand.
