Journal Entry # 2: Second Culture Kids by Dian Curtis Regan The teenage girl in the short story “Second Culture Kids” is named Amina. She was originally from Guanta, Venezuela and had recently immigrated to Houston, Texas. The reason that Amina’s family immigrated to the U.S. was to get away from the major rioting that was occurring to kick out Cesar Chavez or to move up his election date. As a result of the rioting there was mass violence, and all communication to the outside world was shut down. This caused her stepfather’s company, Vanover Oil, to relocate them to Houston by plane and bus. He was getting bullied and harassed at his school by a kid of a different race about his skin color where he was from. Time after time the kid would bully him and one day he just got really sick of the bully. So one day he got into a fight with him and Nurzhan ended up getting into a gigantic amount of trouble. Before they came to the U.S. must have been pretty good both of their parents had government jobs in Kazakhstan. Both of their kids were in grade school assumingly before they immigrated to the States. Their family took the risk of immigrating to America and it really paid off. Otherwise, if they had stayed in Kazakhstan they would have had no way to receive a steady income and support a family, without a job. The moral of this story is that sometimes to be successful you may have to take certain risks such as emigrating from side of the planet to the other. Such as Maya Alazova and her family did to gain a steady income, therefore supporting their family.

His family was intended for his family to immigrate to Arkansas but they ended up in Alaska, when his Uncle booked the wrong flight. The only struggle immigrating to the U.S. that Adrian and his family occurred was his Uncle saying that they were going to Arkansas instead of Alaska. Since they were going to Alaska instead of Arkansas they had to take 3 planes total to get to their final destination. They got into the U.S. in a very safe, legal, and confusing manner. They were mislead because they were told that they were going to Arkansas while instead they were in fact going to the States. His family came to America to get away from Romania because there his father was in a business with his brother.
