Juan Ponce De Leon was born in Santervas De Campos, Spain on 1460. Juan led a european expedition for gold and gave the state Florida its name, and went on to become the first governor of Puerto Rico. Let’s go back to his childhood, He was born in a poor but noble family, became a soldier and fought against the Moors in Granada. Ponce De Leon was known for his hard work, ambitiousness, and ruthlessness. He is also known for when he built a small financial empire that helped advance spanish colonization in the Caribbean.

When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.

The Dominican Republic today is a major tourist destination and has become a major source of sugar, coffee, and other exports. But the Dominican Republic had to suffer a lot in order to prevail the way they did, undergoing being enslaved by the Spaniards while on the other side of the island the Haitians were enslaved by the french hence the obvious difference in languages and cultures. The main difference is that the Dominican Republic lost their racial identity and until the present day are unaware of their true racial identity. Slavery affects every country and person differently but in the Dominican Republic, slavery took away the nation’s identity.
Juan Ponce de Leon was best known for leading the exploration of Florida and looking for the Fountain of Youth. Juan was born in Spain in the year of 1474 and went to work as a squire for a knight at a young age. As he grew older he fought in a war. He then wanted an adventure so he joined Christopher Columbus on his second journey across the Atlantic. He became a military leader on the island of Hispaniola.
The contract signed with the monarchs made Columbus the governor of any land that he would discover giving him the power he desired. Along with the power of being governor of the new land, he was also given the rights to ten percent of all that he brought back with him to Spain giving him the wealth. This included all gold, pearls, spices, and other objects which he intended to retrieve in the largest quantity possible. After more than a two month voyage, he finally landed on the islands of what is now the present day Bahamas. This seemingly innocent discovery soon would turn into a more than devastating
For countless years, the Natives suffered under the hands of the Spaniards. Slavery, abuse, war, theft, and much more were the result of Spain taking over the Natives homeland and the Native people themselves. In the year 1542, Bartoleme de Las Casas wrote a manuscript called “Brief Account of the Devastation of the Indies”, which held a very detailed account of how the natives suffered, and the actions of the Spaniards. Loewen (11) explains that, “Through this process, our educational media turn flesh-and-blood individuals into pious, perfect creatures without conflicts, pain, credibility, or human interest.” Dr. Jendian explained that heroification presents history characters as superhuman heroes.
Individuals tend to think of a “hero” as a kind person, someone who saves the entire population from a dreadful misery. Hernan Cortes, a Spanish soldier and conquistador, is a hero (in the minds of some) for acting courageously and enhancing Spain’s economy with the gold taken from the Aztecs. But as glorious as he may seem, he also killed many Mexican Natives and Aztecs and caused many unnecessary battles and disruptions for them. Aside from disease, Cortes also majorly disrupted the Aztec culture and religion by converting many to Catholicism. Depending on what facts were taken into consideration throughout his life, he could be seen as a hero, or a villain.
Eventually he was able to sail. He changed history by never giving up. If he had given up, we would not have everything that we have today, and people would not know about the new land until years or months after he found the land. In conclusion, I think that Christopher columbus is a hero.
Christopher Columbus is a man who is known in society simultaneously as a hero and a villain of his time. What if the world had to pick only one, what would it be? In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population.
