Works of the Prophets There is no question that Judah and Israel were living in evil times during the days of the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah. The kings were living evil lives that did not follow that law that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had given them. God’s anger and wrath is shown in the prophet’s writings, but there is also a hope and a future that will come for God’s people someday. The sins of Judah and Israel were great, but God’s greatness is shown in the way he will one day redeem them and show them the ultimate act of mercy, sending his son Jesus Christ to die. The split of Israel is first seen to happen after the rule of Solomon, as the family members of David fight for power (Koning, Lecture, 2017). The north half of the split went to Jeroboam and the south half went to Rehoboam. The southern part of the split was called Judah and this new nation was pulled strongly away from God and his law. Their struggle mainly existed around an obsession with idolatry. They worshipped false gods and rejected their covenant relationship with HIm. The northern half of the split continued to be Israel, and was ruled by Jeroboam. Israel wasn’t any better than Judah as they struggled with the sin of idolatry as well. In Isaiah and Jeremiah, much of the writing is prophesies about the destruction that is coming for the people as punishment for their sins against God. Although God did pour out his wrath upon them in punishment, insight is shown into what the covenant relationship with God was intended to look like. It is shown how God is truly faithful to his covenant people, even when His people are not faithful to Him. God would continue to be faithful in the futures of Israel and Jeremiah. God had to bring punishment upon Israel and Judah before he could get to the good plans that were in his future for Israel. Isaiah 2:9 says “So people will be brought low and everyone humbled-- do not forgive them.” In Isaiah 9:12 it says “His anger has not turned away; his hand is still stretched out.” God needed to end the era of Judah, and turn Israel back to him. So, he sent the Babylonians to defeat Judah and to rule over them (Angel, 2017). This showed Israel who the one true God was. There was hope in the next prophecies of Isaiah and Jeremiah
