The nation of Israel had been separated into two parts the southern kingdom was Judah and the Northern Kingdom was Israel. The entire nation was headed down a path of sin and idolatry that would ultimately end in destruction. There were two prophets that God used to bring a message to the nations. The prophet Isiah is known for writing the book that bears his name. Isiah’s writings are known for the messages of the coming Messiah years before his coming. The prophet Jeremiah was known as the weeping prophet because he knew what was about to happen and that no matter how hard he tried to convince the people they just did not listen. He was a man with a mission and as a prophet, he spoke God’s words. The words that he spoke were about confrontation, exhortation, and warnings. These types of messages made him very unpopular. Even though he faced opposition Isaiah still stood strong on the truth. Isiah spoke of the warnings but he also spoke of the coming Messiah. The prophet Jeremiah showed his inner turmoil dealing with his call as a prophet. At times, the messages of a destruction of the land were sometimes overwhelming. Even though he was going through some of his inner turmoil’s he continued with his mission of proclaiming God’s judgment against the people of Judah. He spoke of how their relationship with God was as a failing marriage. Jeremiah wanted the people to remember how God had taken care of them and blessed them. Israel acted wickedly and God Judged it and put Israel in exile but Judah Israel’s sister did not learn anything from what Israel went through. The sins of Israel and Judah included marrying outside of their people which created the worshiping of other gods. They became spiritual blinded and indulged in the sin of idolatry and disobeyed God’s laws. God was very upset with their behavior and this was the cause of the exile of Israel. In the book of Isiah, he said that Judah was behaving like rebellious children (Encountering the Old Testament, 20) God said that even an ox and a donkey recognizes who feeds them so that they will not rebel against them. Because of their sinful ways God was going to bring judgment unto the people of Judah. God’s judgment came upon the leaders that he will cut off their positions. Bad kings and priest were to blame for most of the issues and problems of the nation. Judah is compared to a vineyard. That God said that he would trample. Now in the book of Jeremiah the city of Judah was compared to a prostitute (Jeremiah 2:20) God promised to judge them severely. God used Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian armies to destroy Judah and Jerusalem. Israel is not destroyed because of a weak army but because the Lord wills it and uses the foreign
