Any individual is comprised of their characteristics. Certain qualities bind people and their society. Many attributes are found within me and contribute to, why I am an excellent choice to be an osteopathic medical student at KYCOM. Although this question requires confidence to answer and humility to buffer. I hope to use both to explain a few of my personal qualities that would make me an excellent choice for KYCOM.
Confidence is important for standing up to fear, particularly the fear of failure. It is required to set us in motion. Intelligence is the tool. Maturity gives us depth and builds confidence. An individual with great interpersonal skills may reflect a wonderful persona, but may not care anything about another person. Integrity is often legalistic, without empathy. So for myself, I find empathy as the most important. It is a must for the medical student and osteopathic physician. It includes more than just caring and understanding. It envelopes the ability to experience the feelings of another. This is what being a doctor is. Putting oneself in the other person's shoes and truly understanding their needs and feelings. Each of the above characteristics on their own without empathy would leave the patient-physician relationship without the relationship. But with true empathy, a doctor can know and understand his patient more completely and be able to communicate more fully. It is the fulfillment of the patient-physician relationship and can provide positive momentum toward a patient-centered healthcare system. These qualities describe the fullness of a person. As a medical student at KYCOM, they will be demonstrated by me because they are found, in who I am.
