This presented an opportunity for Kabuki, who would slip out, navigate the adjacent apartment buildings with a single leap, then descend down the fire escape to the ground floor, and fly to the backyard. After a harrowing, sleepless night and lost day at work, my husband Steve, and I recovered Kabuki. A climb through a neighbors’ window on the ground floor was necessary. The temperature was hot, and the car air-conditioner in disrepair. At a red light in east Harlem in New York City, Ziggy leaned on a button that operated the power windows and effectively opened the window in the back seat. Ziggy is Kabuki’s brother, a tri-color Australian Shepherd. <<insert image12>> Suddenly, a woman standing at the bus stop, where we paused for a red light looked at all of us in the car and started screaming. Thinking she was crazy, we quickly drove off when the light turned green. A half hour later, we arrived at our apartment, only to realize that Kabuki was gone. He had jumped out of the car at the red light, when Ziggy opened the window. The hysterical woman must have thought that it was a rat, not a cat. We hurried back to that bus stop, believing we would never see our dear Kabuki again to our dismay and broken hearts. By the time we arrived back at the bus stop, over an hour had passed. We thought for sure that Kabuki was lost forever. Just then, a gentleman who had seen our panicked faces as we searched for our beloved cat, pointed toward a parked vehicle. <<insert
