Fresh out of high school many students who are entering into college have very little knowledge of how to meet such requirements in a college English class. A significant proportion of incoming or returning students have difficulty understanding the substance of academic writing or reading at a college level. These students are the ones who need the help to advance in their class. These are the student's who deny the fact that they are failing at literature and especially how read and construct a simple paragraph. These are the students that need help with college. Rey and Roberta Karstadt in the article Strategies in Teaching Paired Reading with Content Courses, talks about how college students have negative attitudes attending a reading courses for a number of reasons. There are some college students who believe they do not need no reading or composition classes to improve their reading level. These students have accepted that they are in perfectly fine on where they stand in literature. These students have also thought that their placement test scores are inaccurate in order to be placed in a composition class. Students who accept their reading skills need improvement, but dislike reading or feel uncomfortable having to attend remedial-type of courses. Rey and Karstadt believe reading courses should be provided in colleges and universities because it benefits many students who have difficulty in reading and writing. The authors Rey and Karstadt have quoted Maxwell and stated “Students derive more benefits from attending developmental reading courses that are integral part of the academic curricula (Maxwell, 1997). When it comes to college reading courses being linked to content areas such as biology, counseling, and psychology these courses are really beneficial to most college students in order for them to be prepared and succeed in school. When students are reading their textbooks, they have no clue of what they are reading. The students are lost and have to read the text multiple times in order to understand what the argument was. Sheila Valencia in her article, “ When High School Students Struggle with Textbook Reading” affirmed that “students skim or skim or through the textbook.” This is due to the fact because the students are not able to gather information from a sentence or a paragraph. Students need reading and writing courses because they are fresh out of high school come into college with a reading level of a 7th to 9th grade. If the students don't get help they will be advancing to much more complicated class. Those complicated classes will give them text book in which are constructed for people with a reading level of grade 13. These readings will be nearly 6-8 years of missing knowledge. They may not understand the reading because they were not receiving help with reading or writing in high school before enrolling in college classes, nor would they if they don't enroll themselves into reading/writing courses. ANother reason why students don’t understand their textbook is because the student may be an ESL learner whose major may not be literate in another language. Reading courses on a campus will provide student a better opportunity of advancing in their classes with the
