1. Why emphasize writing to learn in content areas?

“Writing to learn is a pedagogical approach grounded in the belief that the reasoning required to write about a topic or concept will help students gain understanding” (Fry & Villagomez, 2012, p.170). In order to write effectively, one must be knowledgeable about the content they are writing about. One’s knowledge about a particular theme or topic can be evident in various activities by assessment procedures, but it is through writing that critical thinking is employed. No longer are students simply reiterating the points made during instruction, but are rather digging deeper into the meaning to employ in their own writing. Definitions can be …show more content…

As teachers, we have to understand the importance that reading plays in all aspects of an individual’s life, but especially the link that occurs between it and writing. “Reading inspires students, introducing them to great ideas and improving their ability to think critically and analytically” (Retrieved July 9, 2015 from https://writing-speech.dartmouth.edu/teaching/materials/first-year-writing-pedagogies-methods-design/integrating-reading-and-writing.) Without reading, students would lack examples with which to change or create their own ideas and thoughts. In order for students to be motivated to write, we must motivate them to read. We can accomplish this goal by giving students choices, rather than demand they read a particular book and write a particular response regarding it. “Students should be encouraged through different opportunities to develop personally relevant reasons for selecting books or topics about which to write.” (Raphael & Englert, 1998, p. 2-3). Like Alisha Hyslop so clearly stated, “Literacy, fundamentally described as the ability to read, write and communicate, is a prerequisite to learning in all other subjects, especially as students are exposed to increasingly diverse and intri -cate texts from which they need to glean knowledge” (CTE ’s Role in Adolescent Literacy, p. …show more content…
