In the novel, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins an important decision is when Katniss Everdeen volunteers for her younger sister Primrose Everdeen. The decision Katniss made changed her character as she came back to home to district 12 a public hero. When she got home she was struggling from post traumatic stress. Katniss was also in the middle of a love triangle with Peeta, the male tribute from district 12 and her friend and hunting partner from home, Gale.

Firstly, the important decision Katniss made to volunteer for her sister at the repping made her a public hero. This changes Katniss’s character as before The Hunger Games Katniss had only seen Gale as a hunting partner and a close friend. Katniss had also only seen Peeta once before The Hunger Games and they had never talked to each other before. When she gets back she has a serious friendship with both Gale and Peeta. Both Gale and Peeta had told her their feeling towards her, putting Katniss in the middle of a love triangle. When Katniss says “I can’t help comparing what I have with Gale to what I am pretending to have with Peeta” this shows how Katniss is comparing her relationship with both boys to one another. Katniss is stuck about her feeling and what she really wants. She has so many responsibilities after The Hunger Games and has lots of people watching her and the decisions she is making. This changed katniss character as she was now thinking about these relationships and not more important things, like keeping her family safe. People can relate to Katniss if they are also in the same situation. Relationships can change a person's priorities and options on everything going on around them. Before going to The Hunger Games Katniss was only worried about feeding her family and keeping her little sister safe.
