As a member of the admissions board for the United States University, I would like to nominate ten very accomplished individuals for acceptance into this year’s class. These ten individuals have shown their dedication in their respective fields and offer to better not only the university, but put their efforts to work together for the betterment of society. Along with these ten nominations, I have created a two person waitlist should any of the ten choose not to accept their acceptance and attend United States University this coming fall. The ten applicants I nominate for acceptance: Clarence Darrow, Charles Dawes, Babe Ruth, Robert Jones, Harold Grange, Langston Hughes, Ernest Hemingway, Duke Ellington, Charles Lindbergh, and Margaret Sanger.

The Augustana Observer has been around since 1902; 42 years after Augustana College was founded. For this reason, The Observer brings us valuable info about life on campus and what students deemed important during that time. I managed to get my hands on one from October 15, 1956. The front page presents that Homecoming season is among them based on the larger
Hampton University has 110 student organizations that people on campus can participate in while Richard Bland has only 13 clubs/organizations for a student to participate in. Going to Hampton University can give a student more opportunities to express themselves through the various clubs that are introduced to them while on campus. Richard Bland has a small amount of clubs available for students, with that being said, this limits the amount of students applying for club memberships because the clubs offered may not be something that everyone is interested in. Hampton University and Richard Bland both have a variety of sports, but they both vary in the type of sports they offer. Richard Bland offers both men and women’s sports (basketball, golf, soccer, softball, and cheerleading) while Hampton University offers tennis, golf, bowling, football, volleyball, softball, track, sailing and cross country.

At Jay M. Robinson High School in Concord, North Carolina, Shannon Winchester notices a lot of factors that play a role in the performance of her students. One of the biggest factors is race and how certain groups of student tend to behave better than others. Winchester said this primarily falls on the basis of race, with white students outperforming both black and Hispanic students. However, Winchester says there is a significant issue in Jay M. Robinson High School: a fair amount of minority students are bused into the school. Jay M. Robinson High School lies in a primarily middle class section of Concord, and is only five miles from Charlotte Motor Speedway and six from Concord Mills mall, the most visited mall in North Carolina.

The poem “The Burning Girl”, by Mary Karr, depicts a young woman who is experiencing great distress due to the depression she is inflicted with. Karr presents this through the recurring symbolism of the girl “burning”, along with other figurative language and literary sound devices being used to illustrate a vivid mental image for the reader. Sound techniques such as rhyme, alliteration, and assonance are partnered with metaphors and personification to paint the picture of this poem. “The Burning Girl” is a free-verse, narrative poem. Tonally, its language and imagery provide an overall somber tone, although occasional glimpses of beauty appear here too.
I am a physics major and math minor at Georgia College & State university focusing on classes that deal with astronomy. I have taken observational techniques in astronomy a couple semesters prior and I will be taking an astrophysics class next semester. I have been interested in astronomy and cosmology for the majority of my life watching documentaries and various videos on topics ranging from star formation, to black holes, to string theory. This past year was my first time taking classes that actually deal with the math behind many of the videos I had watched throughout my life and being able to start understanding how and why certain phenomena are the way they are has been a great joy for me.
