Before Susannah jumps into making the hasty decision that may affect the company’s overall interest, she needs to take a step back and reevaluate all the facts. Although, there is no doubt that Kenton’s action is inappropriate and may have damaged the company’s image. There are three key factors that Susannah can base upon when determining the appropriate action. First, Downcity’s policy does not specify and define the usage of social media. The best option for her to take would be coaching and then follow by disciplinary action if the problem persists. Why coaching? The answer is simple. In my opinion, Savannah needs to take into consideration about the generation gap. A rising star on the sales team, Rachel mentions to her that growing up with social media they are so accustom to sharing the opinion with friends, family, and even employers. This may be the reason why Kenton did not see it such a big thing. Savannah should also realize that when Kenton came to her and Tyson to provide feedback, they completely ignored him. As a manager, both of them have failed to recognize the characteristic of a different generation. Based on the principal of management course, Kenton’s characteristic falls under the millennial generation (Generation Y). According to Modern Management Concepts & Skills, “Generation Y is interested in being a part of a team, working in a collaborative environment, and engaging with social media and other technologies.” (Certo, 2015.) Savannah needs to adjust her leadership style to overcome the challenges of managing the different generation. During a coaching session, Savannah can inform Kenton that his action has caused a gravely concerned across the board. In fact, the company is in the process of implementing a social media policies. Training will be provided to all employee so that everyone can have a better understanding of how to use the social media appropriately. To make the coaching process more efficient, Savanah can refer to the Dale Carnegie’s “Talk regarding the other person’s interests”. By addressing that he is the top sales of the company, his professional image is crucial to his future success. He needs to make sure that he projected a positive image of himself and the company.
