Key Person Biographical Sketch
My interest in nutrition began while in high school when I committed myself to improving my athletic performance in cross country running. I had been running for three years previous and gave little thought about what I put into my body. Fortunately, I was able to change that. I applied my own self research on recommended amounts of each macronutrient for runners so that I could compete at a higher level in a sport that I had true passion and drive. I experienced faster times and felt better than ever. Miraculously, I grew up in a family that understood the benefits of a balanced diet and was able to take away the importance that fruits and vegetables play in the body. One that I feel is commonly overlooked is food insecurity in remote Alaskan villages. Not having affordable, accessible foods dramatically dampens a community’s productivity and longevity and I feel that a change has to be made. Thankfully, I grew up with an ever growing knowledge about the importance of a healthy balanced diet and I plan to pass that on as well as integrate an education awareness program into the community of Nome. This presents a problem when a family’s food intake entirely depends on the success of the season’s fishing success. In addition, fish has very high fat content which eaten in large quantities over long periods of time can have negative health benefits. This behavior puts a heavy emphasis on meats as the primary source in the diet which distracts the consumer from the other necessary food groups. In order to receive the most accurate data the project will commence on September 26, 2017. This way the majority of the town will have returned from the fishing season and be present when the team is gathering data.
