I am a third year transferred student at UC Berkeley and am very interested in learning media studies as my major. After attending Media Study 10, I believe studying media would be an ideal direction for me to broad my knowledge and experience My interests in media started when I was teenager as a reporter in my school’s broadcasting club. There, I enjoyed reporting news and information but also had opportunities to understand the influence that the media could have to change our lives as I delivered critical issues. When I came to the U.S., I felt a discernible disjointedness between many different groups of international students, and believed this was because of a deficiency of understanding and communication between different perspectives.
Frightening motion pictures help the audience live different lives in the comfort of their own homes. In the story, Why We Crave Horror Movies, by Stephen King, the issue involves how thriller films appeases oneself. Whereas, the article, Horror Movies Take Escapism to the Next Level Meditation to Destress Allows the Mind a Break, by Amber Appleby, relates to why humans relish suspenseful movies. Thus, both the story and the article indicate similar yet different ideas regarding how horror movies affect us.
I concur with King that we play host to anticivilization emotions and this explains why people can crave horror movies. There is some level of darkness in us, but, at most times, this dark side is eclipsed by the increased emphasis on civilization. King (2013) cites the case of emotions related to friendship, loyalty, love, and kindness to show how the society adore civilization and strive at maintaining the status quo. However, this does not entirely suppress the dark side in us. “Anticivilization emotions don’t go away and they demand periodic exercise”(King, 2013).
Dr L. K. The target audience is for the teenagers and over. Based on the short story, it contains lots of violence, grown up themes and includes demons. To stay faithful to the story, we have to capture the tone of the film and this would create a M15+ rating. The directors previous film are graphic, i.e. Cube (1997) and Splice (2009). Teenagers all very excited by the Horror genre, just looking at the success of the Paranormal Activity franchise.
Ahhhhh, late 90s teenage angst. Without it, horror movies would have been few and far between in the 90s. Disturbing Behavior is one such teenage angst horror film that came out after the big Scream boom of 1996, along with several other horror films that all looked the same (The Faculty, Urban Legend). It 's a horror film that hooks it claws into the fears of teenagers not fitting into and the ultimate test of growing up, peer pressure. Sure, it 's all wrapped up in a story about mind control, sex and violence, but deep down inside it 's all about fitting in versus individuality.
In my opinion, the intended audience would be that finds interest in blood and gore films. The explanation behind this is that younger audience appreciate thrills. These movies will probably excite the younger audience instead of an older audience. These films intend to attract the people that have an interest towards blood and gore. Older audience are put off by the blood and gore of films as the younger audience think its entrancing.
Coming of age film The coming of age genre has been around as early as the ancient greece times. With stories such as Hercules. The coming of age genre was made to teach the adolescents about growing up. It was with the invention of movies that let the adults not only tell adolescents but now they can show them.
I intended to create two one minute trailers to advertise a new horror film. I wanted to create a sense of enigma; this would make the audience become more inclined to visit the cinema to watch the film. I was cautious about getting the right balance between leaving an enigma and showing the audience enough so that they became interested in the film. I was aiming this trailer at people aged 15 to 23 year olds both male and female. I decide to use actors aged 15 and 16, this would mean that the protagonist is relatable for the audience.
Along with this, many people enjoy being scared as it serves to relieve anxiety and stress. This can be evidenced by, “people may actually enjoy being scared” (Andrade and Cohen). Viewers like to feel like they are ini danger when in reality they know they are not. All of this is especially true for the genres main demographic, teenagers. Seeing an R-rated movie with a lot of blood and gore has become a rite of passage to signal moving from being a child to an adult.
