In “King of the Bingo Game” by Ralph Ellison, the protagonist is confronting life in the face by trying to win something that is so simple in exchange for benefiting something complex. Ellison writes this story discussing a social topic that reveals fate and how one will choose to depict it. The variety of literary devices allows Ellison to portray such a theme. He uses symbolism, setting, and the narrators point of view to show the depth of the story and the substratum of the overall theme. The protagonist in this story is the main character and is dealing with several conflicts that are external and internal. This is what delineates the entire story. The protagonist is suppressed with a huge weight on his back that he believes he can lift, but truly is crushed from the beginning. He believes that he can apply restrictions to fate and one can see this by the use of the movie in the story. He has seen it three time and knows the scenes and endings of it but yet still watches it. However, with this he wonders what would happen if the picture got out of hand, which evinces that he is optimistic and isn’t set on everything is set to stone. "He laughed softly to himself.
